Saint Helier (French language: Saint-Hélier, Jèrriais: St Hélyi) is one of the twelve parishes of Jersey, the largest of the Channel Islands in the English Channel. St. Helier is the capital of the Island (although Government House is situated in St. Saviour).
Saint Helier is named for Helier (or Helerius), a 6th century ascetic hermit. The traditional date of his martyrdom is AD 555. His feast day, marked by an annual municipal and ecumenical pilgrimage to the Hermitage, is on July 16.
Saint Helier is located in the south of Jersey on the bank of a small gulf.
Beach Havre des Pas. The nearest to city centre, and consequently extraordinary popular, beach – southern, solar and reliably protected from strong winds.
The flora and fauna of Saint Helier is extremely various. Many representatives of flora and fauna are endemic, this means they cannot be seen somewhere else outside the island.
Numerous birds. Conditionally they can be divided in two groups: those who arrive here on wintering and spend time on the fertile land southern and southeast coasts and those who lodge in rocks in the spring and in the summer for posterity deducing.
The flora is not less than fauna. For today there are hundreds of kids of flowers, not to mention trees and bushes which are presented by more than 200 kinds. It seems that inhabitants of the island have erected flowers in a cult – they grow everywhere: in gardens, parks, greenhouses.
Main attractions — Elizabeth's Castle, the chapel of St Helier constructed in the rock, and parliament building. Also in Royal city park there is a monument to King George II which is considered in "zero kilometre». All distances on island are counted from this place.
Parish church Saint Helier is interesting of how harmoniously it unites some architectural styles. One more sight is a building of Jersey Parliament, by the way, its one of the oldest in English community, on the Royal square.
